Kisumu International Airport Friday received a major boost after Freedom Airline Express Ltd. launched its new route to the lakeside city.
The colorful ceremony was graced by Her Excellency Mama Ida Odinga assisted by Mama Kisumu Dorothy Nyong’o who was flanked by Madam Antonia Owili.
Describing the airline as comfortable and beautiful, Mama Ida said Kisumu City is becoming the most preferred destination for many airline operators. She said the introduction of the new airline is of great economical value in terms of tourism and trade citing that people from the region prefer flying to driving.
“The story of flights are full will now be a thing of the past”, she said.
Mama County who spoke on behalf of the Governor Prof Anyang Nyong’o said the county of Kisumu is so excited to welcome the new baby and is calling on more airlines to come to kisumu noting that Kisumu has high traffic and so many times people have missed important meetings because of the few flights.
She noted that the county government will give its full support to every investor who comes to Kisumu.
The CEC in charge of Roads, Trasport and Public Works Thomas Owiti described Kisumu as a virgin county with untapped opportunities thus calling on more investors to come on board.
He said that time had come to experience inter county air services especially for the Lake Region Economic Block Counties with Kisumu being the originating airport.
Freedom Airlines will at the initial stages operate the route 4 times a week at kshs 5,500 one way and 11,000 return.

Freedom Airline’s Director in charge of Safety & Quality Zephania Sylvester said the Airline is considering opening up routes to Entebe and Mwanza with Kisumu as the hub.
Freedom has been operating since 2009 majorly in the Northern parts of the country.
The General Manager of Kisumu International Airport Mr Joseph Okumu assured Freedom Express support in terms of facility, service, safety and security.
He praised the county government for the continuous support it has given the operators out of Kisumu Airport and especially the incoming Freedom Airlines.
He said the total airline operators to kisumu has increased to six and 30 flights daily with the coming of Freedom Airlines.
