Police Teargas Nursery Kids in Nyalenda Slums

Officer, what if it was your kid?

As the NASA protesters took to the streets in the biweekly protests against the IEBC secretariat, police took it upon themselves to teargas nursery school children in St Peter’s Kodingo ECD Center in Nyalenda Slum, Kisumu County.

Beatrice Schnelli-Okello, Founder of St Peter’s Awich Kodingo ECD (Early Childhood Development) Center located in the expansive Nyalenda Slum (the second largest slum in Kenya), said that during the protests held in Kisumu on Monday, armed Police Officers unlawfully entered into the school premises and hurled teargas canisters in the compound, without any due regard for the children aged between 3-7 years and staffers. It took the intervention of teachers and good Samaritans to evacuate and aid the little ones to safety.

It is unfathomable to involve innocent children, within school premises and further risk their lives. The children are traumatized and some have suffered injuries.

She added “I fail to understand this kind of attack on small children.”

This comes in the backdrop of a similar situation in Langata Primary School where police lobbed teargas canisters when the kids were protesting against grabbing of their playground.
