Kisumu Central Constituency is the major player in Kisumu County, with most businesses all situated within its jurisdiction, it becomes the most important seat of power in the whole of the county. It is in this respect that whoever is/becomes the City MP as its popularly referred to down here should be one person who has the city residents and players at heart.

The constituency is the powerhouse in Kisumu County. It has one of the biggest open air markets in East and Central Africa (Kibuye Market), it seats the Kisumu County headquarter, as well as a host to the major hospitality, health, education and administrative facilities among others in this lakeside city.

But just what makes Hon Ken Obura tick?

The constituency is the powerhouse in Kisumu County. It has one of the biggest open air markets in East and Central Africa (Kibuye Market), it seats the Kisumu County headquarter, as well as a host to the major hospitality, health, education and administrative facilities among others in this lakeside city.

Since this constituency also has the greatest number of youths who are jobless, Hon Ken Obura managed to lobby the central government to bring to the constituency the NYS Project that was helping put up administrative facilities, health facilities and also clean up the local neighborhoods. Remember the county does not employ staff to keep the neighborhoods clean. These youths were tasked with environmental cleanups, garbage collection and disposal, and also removing debris in the various flood trenches in the slums. However, this project came to an end when their fraud at the Ministry of Devolution and Planning at the national level, as there were no funds to continue the project.

The various youths who were employed (totalling to around 5,000) managed to save some of the money they were being paid in a SACCO, and most of them now used these savings to start own businesses and are continuing to help in the development of the local economy.

Jobs have thus been created for the youth.

Ken Obura also managed to convince the national government to bring to Kisumu Central the neighborhood electrification project at the time their was increased insecurity in Kisumu City, courtesy of the ‘42 Brothers‘ and other gangs. This saw to it that most lights were installed in collaboration with the Central Govt and the County Govt. And now, this project has grown until there are lights both floodlights and streetlights all over the city and local neighborhoods. Security has been restored to a whole new level.

I may not be able to talk about all the things the MP has done for the constituency, while remember the works of the members of parliament are purely legislation, but this does not mean that they cannot influence projects for their constituents, from both the national government and other partners.

This Constituency has a Population of 168,892 (as at 2013) residents, with the following wards:
