Massive Development projects that Kisumu County residents should look forward to.

1. Construction of a modern Sh14 billion port in Kisumu as Kenya targets a bigger maritime trade stake in the region.

This will open ways for Kisumu County’s Lake Transport Project that will see passenger, goods vessels introduced at the Winam gulf to promote trade and spur the county’s and the region’s economic growth. The feasibility study for the project had been conducted, concluded and analysed and the water transport system found to be a very viable undertaking, and has been awaiting the modernization of the Port. The County Government has even signed a memorandum of understanding with foreign investors and Kenya Maritime Authority for financing of the project

2. The ongoing Kshs 600 million expansion of Kisumu International Airport

that will elevate the airport from class C to D and E, with a runway like that of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, so as to enable the airport to accommodate bigger aircraft.

3. The rolling out of the Lake Front Development Program

by the County Government in partnership with the UN-Habitat, Agence Francaise Development (AFD), Kisumu Urban Project (KUP), Kenya Railways (KR), Kenya Port Authority (KPA) and Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) develop a master plan, design and attract investment to the Lake Front as a tourist destination locally and internationally.

4. The recently announced construction of the 172-kilometre Ahero-Isebania highway

that will traverse four counties – Migori, Kisii, Homa Bay and Kisumu – and is expected to improve trade in the Lake Victoria basin.

5. The recent rerouting and rephrasing of the Standard Gauge Railway

from the initially planned Nairobi – Malaba, to new the termination point at Kisumu on Lake Victoria to offer the port of Mombasa with the shortest access to East Africa Community, which is through the pier of Kisumu.

All these need an environment free from political wrangles, competent county government leadership and a high level of preparedness on the part of Kisumu county residents.

I will not gainsay on how critical it is that the current county leadership sees the completion of the above projects, which cannot happen without a second term.

development.” -John Maxwell
